Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce

This sauce has the sweetness of maple syrup and the spice of chipotle peppers. Jeff Approved.

Ingredients

  • One 28-ounce (790 g) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) packed light brown sugar
  • 3 chipotle peppers in adobo, diced
  • 1 cup (240 ml) white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) unfiltered apple juice ( I used apple sauce)
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) salt
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) black pepper

Method

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a heavy-bottomed saucepan and stir together.
  2. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce is thick and reduced by about a quarter, 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  4. The sauce will keep, refrigerated, in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
